NEET 2024 Scandal: Allegations of Paper Leak and Irregularities Shake Trust in India's Premier Medical Entrance Exam

Allegations of irregularities and potentially a question paper leak have surrounded the recent announcement of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2024 results for medical admissions. Aspiring medical students are outraged by this, which has also sparked worries about the reliability of this highly competitive exam.

The scoring pattern was the primary source of controversy in the NEET 2024 results. At an astonishing 99.997129 percentile, 67 candidates achieved the highest All India Rank (AIR) 1. The standard marking scheme appeared mathematically impossible when a number of students received marks of 718 or 719 out of 720, causing confusion.

In the middle of the controversy, the NEET-conducting National Testing Agency (NTA) gave some students "grace marks" to make up for wasted exam time, saying this permitted scores of 718 or 719. However, this clarification did not resolve the resulting controversy.
These irregularities have increased fears of a possible paper leak, with charges that some candidates might have obtained an unfair advantage by having prior access to the question paper and answers. When it was discovered that eight top scorers from the same testing centre had roll numbers that appeared suspiciously similar, allegations arose.

When some candidates appealed to the Supreme Court, citing multiple suspected malpractices and paper leaks, the issue took a legal turn. They insisted on the test's integrity being violated and demanded that a new exam be held. The apex court's agreement to examine the case further intensifies the charges' seriousness.

The dispute was also framed by a paper leak case in Bihar, in which 13 people were taken into custody for allegedly selling candidates leaked NEET questions and answers for outrageous sums of money—up to ₹50 lakhs.

As the dust settles on the NEET 2024 crisis, millions of candidates' confidence in the integrity and transparency of the exam process is in jeopardy. Authorities have to respond to these accusations quickly and take the required action to protect the integrity of the exceptionally competitive medical entrance exam. Failing to do so could damage students' faith in the educational system and risk the careers of future doctors.
