Defending National Integrity: Arundhati Roy Charged with Sedition and Unlawful Activities

Self-described activist and writer Arundhati Roy has been in the news once more for her controversial and provocative remarks made at a 2010 event. With its title, "Azadi: The Only Way," the event turned out to be little more than a covert attempt to spread the anti-national cause and stoke separatist sentiments in Kashmir. Roy openly argued for Kashmir's independence from India on this occasion. Her comments clearly aimed to encourage illegal activity and compromise the territorial integrity of our country. Especially coming from a well-known person with a lot of power, such seditious remarks are unforgivable.

The authorities' swift action against Roy and her accomplice, Kashmiri academic Sheikh Showkat Hussain, is commendable. Under strict legislation, such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Lieutenant Governor of Delhi V.K. Saxena has properly authorised prosecution of them. Specifically, Roy and Hussain will face charges under Section 13 of the UAPA, which deals with advocating, abetting, or inciting any unlawful activity. This section carries a maximum punishment of seven years in prison, and it is a necessary measure to counter the threat posed by individuals who seek to undermine the nation's unity and security.

Several sections of the IPC, including Section 124-A (sedition), Section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups), Section 153-B (imputation, assertions prejudicial to national integration), Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and Section 505 (statements conducive to public mischief), will also prosecute them. These accusations are not only warranted but also long overdue. Roy has crossed the line between free speech and open sedition and encouraged illegal activity. It is nothing less than traitorous that she continues to try to present Kashmir as a separate state from India in order to support its independence.

People like Roy deserve accountability for their actions of using public forums to propagate divisive and anti-national sentiments. We make it very clear that we will not tolerate such behavior and will fully prosecute anyone who attempts to undermine the integrity of the country under harsh laws. While Roy's supporters may protest and accuse the government of suppressing free speech, it's crucial to remember that the right to free speech does not grant individuals the right to incite violence, disturb the peace, or advocate for the breakup of the country. Roy has crossed the line into outright sedition, exceeding the parameters of acceptable dissent.

It makes no difference when the prosecution starts or during the summer when courts are off. We must hold those who jeopardize the security and unity of the country accountable for their actions, regardless of their celebrity or social standing. It is past time people like Arundhati Roy, who have shown a shameless contempt for the security and integrity of the country on numerous occasions, take the fallout from their deeds. Given the justified accusations against her, the prosecution should issue a warning to anyone considering similar acts that compromise the unity and sovereignty of the country.
